Thanks to Nottingham College, it’s Mini-Assembly Number 3!
As part of a continued drive to encourage mini-assemblies to take place within local groups, organisations, companies and communities, Nottingham College hosted a mini-assembly attended by 31 passionate students supported by 6 staff and 3 members of the Nottingham Climate Assembly.
As a longstanding member of the Nottingham Green Partnership, over the last few years, Nottingham College has worked tirelessly to become as sustainable as possible. With 10 campuses of varying age and complexity across the City, catering for over 25,000 students, Nottingham College is a major player and a keen supporter of CN28, Nottingham’s 2028 carbon-neutral target.
Demonstrating support for the environment, in February the College ran a day-long Sustainability Event for staff followed by their mini-assembly which they hosted on Earth Day, 22 April 2024.
The Assembly, which ran over lunchtime, was attended by a delightful and diverse group of students from several campuses.
The College asked attendees to address the following questions during their lunchtime mini-assembly:
Thinking about people in your own communities, who will be most affected by climate change, why and how can they respond?'
How can educational establishments help in the fight against climate change?
Do you think AI technologies will help or hinder CN28? Consider both positives and negatives.
Can you imagine three ways or changes in behaviour that may help your community? What support may be needed to aid this?
The attendees split into four breakout groups with each group focussed on one of the four questions. Each group produced discussion points, views, ideas, and solutions which were then presented to the whole group by one spokesperson or notetaker.
Strong themes in the deliberations included:
Climate Change is going to affect us all and we need to act to become more resilient and reduce consumption;
Acting at a community level is vital, supporting those less able.
Educational establishments like Nottingham College have a big part in helping people deal with Climate Change. AI can be a useful tool in doing that but we need to be realistic about what is achievable.
If you are interested in hosting your own mini-assembly which can help feed into the main City Assembly, why not get in touch and see how we can support you.
