Key Nottingham Youth Climate Assembly learnings
Researchers and members of Nottingham Climate Assembly from Nottingham Trent University, and the University of Nottingham have collaborated on a reflective article discussing Nottingham Youth Climate Assembly recently published in the journal Children’s Geographies. The key themes covered in the paper include deliberative democracy, intergenerational justice, climate policy, and youth climate action.
The paper explores how national and international policies shape and constrain youth action and voice in deliberative practices, focusing on the UK Government’s Sustainability Strategy and the Berlin Declaration on Education for Sustainable Development. Through the Nottingham Youth Climate Assembly, the paper explores the challenges and successes of undertaking local-level deliberative democratic processes, emphasising the importance of intergenerational and intragenerational justice as well as community partnerships. The paper critiques the tokenistic treatment of young people in climate decision-making and calls for the empowerment and inclusion of young people in these processes. The paper concludes by offering insights into how future interventions could be improved.
